A Wild Discovery!
Listen to this daily worship
Luke 24: 33-35 (NRSVA)
33 That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. 34 They were saying, ‘The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!’ 35 Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.
Every so often, Scripture mentions ‘the companions’:
those who left with Abraham for Moriah (Genesis 24: 5)
the daughters of Jerusalem in the Song of Songs (Song 8: 13)
the three friends of Daniel (Daniel 2: 17)
and here the companions of the eleven disciples, including women who had resourced the earthly ministry of Jesus (Luke 8: 3 and now 24: 33). It was a wild discovery for Jews and Gentiles that women were to be given a place beside men, as it was a wild discovery for all the disciples that Jesus was alive.
What wild discoveries have you made about Jesus and his purpose for your life?
Pray:
Lord Jesus, we take the prayer you taught us, so ordinary and so special, like the bread we eat each day, and ask you to let it loose in the life of the world –
Our Father in heaven:
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power and the glory
are yours, now and for ever. Amen.
