Ephesians 2: 11-14 (NRSVA)

11 So then, remember that at one time you Gentiles by birth, called ‘the uncircumcision’ by those who are called ‘the circumcision’—a physical circumcision made in the flesh by human hands— 12 remember that you were at that time without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14 For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us.

Walls,

Borders,

Rivers,

Mountains,

Seas.

These things separate us,

Contain us,

Divide us

And define us.

Contain us within,

Giving us an identity, a nationality.

Making us different, distinct.

A Highlander,

An Islander,

A Lowlander,

A Sassenach.

These walls, rivers, mountains, seas, borders…

They shape our dialect,

Our mother tongue,

Our customs,

Sometimes even our beliefs.

And yet…

To follow Jesus,

Brings a new identity…

An identity that transcends

Borders, walls, rivers, seas and mountains.

To follow Jesus,

Unites instead of divides.

Sons and daughters of the Living God,

Citizens of that other Kingdom,

The one that’s here, but isn’t of here…

The one that’s breaking in.

Heart by heart.

Do you see it?

Do you sense it?

Pray:

Uniter

River Bridger,

Wall Breaker,

Sea Crosser,

In you,

What divides melts away,

Borders are transcended.

Help us to work together,

To nurture the seeds of your Kingdom as they break through…

Shielding tender shoots,

Giving space to grow.

That your Kingdom might spread far and wide

Changing hearts, renewing minds, transforming lives

Amen.
