A Prayer Before Going For a Walk
Listen to this daily worship
Psalm 1 (NRSVA)
1 Happy are those
who do not follow the advice of the wicked,
or take the path that sinners tread,
or sit in the seat of scoffers;
2 but their delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law they meditate day and night.
3 They are like trees
planted by streams of water,
which yield their fruit in its season,
and their leaves do not wither.
In all that they do, they prosper.4 The wicked are not so,
but are like chaff that the wind drives away.
5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgement,
nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
6 for the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.
Have you ever walked a dog? If you haven’t you are missing out on a real treat!
Dogs live exclusively in the present and they find such joy in the simplest of things. I have two collies and I need to walk them a few times every day. I always look forward to our walks no matter what the weather. I say this as no matter how difficult my day has been and no matter what I’m feeling I always return from the walk uplifted and smiling.
Dogs make you interact with the world around you. On our walks I see the seasons change before my eyes. Everyday I find something that amazes me and fills me with wonder. And I can’t help but smile. It might be seeing the neat row of molehills and imagining Mr Mole burrowing underground. It might be the geese overhead flying back to their field to roost. It might be the weirdly shaped tree with what looks like a face or it might be the snowdrops pushing up through the cold hard ground. It might be the stick Douglas brings me to play fetch with, or seeing Pup get excited when he catches the scent of something, maybe a fox! Seeing those two tails wagging just fills me with joy.
Everyday on those walks I see the glory and wonder of God in his creation and it makes my heart sing!
PRAYER:
Creator God
As I walk with you
Open my eyes to your beauty all around me.
As I walk with you
Open my ears to your song.
As I walk with you
Open my heart to your truth.
Amen
