Prayers from around the World
Every part of the world has its own needs and its own way of being the church. Over the next few weeks, we have invited a number of people from across the world to submit prayers which will allow us to join them in praying for that corner of the world and the challenges facing the church there. The BBC presents a weekly programme called "From our own Correspondent" which give a personal view of some aspect of life where they are stationed. Our "correspondents" are involved in challenging ministries across the world. This is your chance to stand with them, listen to them, see through their eyes and pray with them and for them. Alternatively, since it is holiday seasons, think of it as prayer tourism - a chance to visit a range of countries in our imaginations and remember that God is there, speaking in many languages and sharing in the struggles of his people to bring about resurrection possibilities. Week One - Around the World Prayers for different parts of the world. Week Two - Kenya Barrack Oluoch, an Anglican Church minister in the city of Nairobi. He lives with his wife and three daughters in Kibera Nairobi. His ministry focus is to the youth in Kibera and other slums in the city. Nairobi is a very rich city, accounting for nearly 57% of the National wealth of the country, yet the majority of the 4.5 million city residents are poor. Nearly 60%, of this population, majority of who are the youth, live in the 210 slums spread out in the city. The slums occupy about 30% of the residential land in the city. This is the stack reality of the high population density in these city slums. This high population density accompanied by extreme levels of poverty has brought with it many challenges to the slums residents. Across the city slums the youth are grouping up to form criminal gangs for all the wrong reasons. These include; mugging, rape, robbery with violence as coping strategies to fend for themselves. Example of such groups include; the Amsterdam and Gaza groups comprising 50 youth each. Some members are even teenagers aged between 13 and 17. Week Three - India Jenghee You works with people in Calcutta who are HIV+ve or have AIDS. Week Four - Pakistan Imran Gill works with Operation Mobilisation providing relief, development and evangelism. Week Five - Germany Mike Edwards works in Berlin, networking with churches and agencies.
