Let's Go to Golgotha

This week in the Book Club we are reading the short story 'Let's Go to Golgotha'. Inspired by this months theme on Sanctuary First we are having a look at time travel! Time-travelling tourists go on a "Crucifixion Tour". The tour operator warns the tourists that they must not do anything to disrupt history, Pan Time-Tours takes some precautions to help its tourists blend in — they will be physically present at the time and place of the Crucifixion — and to prevent any historical accidents. But, as often happens with time-travel stories, complications ensue nonetheless.

The story takes an interesting angle to the well known tale of the crusification of Christ, and raises all sorts of interesting questions in the process. What really happned at the crucifiction? What are the perls of time travel? What are we to morally take from this tales? What does this say about our view of moments in history as 'travel' destinations to escape to? Did this moment in time really happen? or are they rebuilding their our own past and future? I look forward to talking about it with you all on Thursday at 3pm in the book club.

"A pack of old men droning out of the scriptures is not religion. I want to see the real thing - I think we should go, Simon. Thus it was decided by Mandy and Sarah. Simon, his family and their freinds were going to see the Crusifiction, at modest package tour prices, of course."

About the Author

Garry Douglas Kilworth was born 5 July 1941 in York. He is a British science fiction, fantasy and historical novelist. Kilworth was raised partly in Aden, South Arabia, the son of an airman. He travelled widely, both in Britain and abroad, and attended over 20 different schools before the age of 15. 

His science fiction and fantasy does not fit any set formula, being more interested in the enigmatic and strange, with roots in folk lore. He states that his one great passion is the short story, at which he is most adept. However, as an eclectic writer he has produced novels in several genres including science fiction, fantasy, horror, historical, children's fiction, war and literary novels. He has also written several books of short stories and two volumes of poetry. Kilworth is a graduate of King's College London. He has published one hundred thirty short stories and over seventy novels.

What is the book club?

Join us every week for a book club, each week we will read a new short story of part of a larger book, the books will be made available as an audio book and we will meet as a group via zoom to chat about the story. All are welcome, hope to see you there.
