Matthew 5: 21-22a
21 “You have heard that people were told in the past, ‘Do not commit murder; anyone who does will be brought to trial.’ 22a But now I tell you: if you are angry with your brother you will be brought to trial
You have heard…But now I tell you.
The kitchen at our house was being replaced recently and what an upheaval that was! Lovely when finished, but for a time dishes, cutlery, bowls, and everything that dwells in a kitchen filled a few other rooms! The place was upside-down for a while, but now normality is returning.
Jesus says you have heard how it was, but now I tell you something different, something new. He started to turn the world and people’s lives upside-down with his new teaching. We don’t want this world’s normality to return, we want to keep stirring it up with the values of the Kingdom!
O Lord, all the world belongs to you, and you are always making all things new; what is wrong you forgive and this new life you give is what’s turning the world upside-down. Loving enemies, creating harmony, serving each other…help us in the battle with our human nature and by your Spirit live in us that we may live in you in this upside-down Kingdom we long to see in our world. Amen.
