Woman in Adultery
John 8: 3-5
The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group and said to Jesus, ”Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?”
“If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.”
Lord, I struggle so hard to cope with the disapproval of my friends. They are so condemning of me. I know I’ve done so many wrong things in my life, but so have they!
Now I’m condemning them!
Lord, you know all about the condemnation of others when you were crucified, even your friends ran away and left you.
My friends are so angry and accusing it fills me with fear and dread; a dread of not belonging anymore.
“He who is without sin cast the first stone.” That means me as well, not just them!
You seem to be showing me a new way of living and loving.
You didn’t remind the woman caught in adultery that she broke one of the Ten Commandments. Instead you offered her an invitation to a life of acceptance and belonging.
Lord, my heart longs for this freedom to belong. You gave your life to free us from sin!
I do belong! I do belong to you. I gladly ask your forgiveness and accept your love.
Lord in your love set me free to love others into knowing they belong to you. Amen.
