Wings
Listen to this daily worship
Psalm 85: 8-13 (NRSVA)
8 Let me hear what God the Lord will speak,
for he will speak peace to his people,
to his faithful, to those who turn to him in their hearts.
9 Surely his salvation is at hand for those who fear him,
that his glory may dwell in our land.10 Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet;
righteousness and peace will kiss each other.
11 Faithfulness will spring up from the ground,
and righteousness will look down from the sky.
12 The Lord will give what is good,
and our land will yield its increase.
13 Righteousness will go before him,
and will make a path for his steps.
I read about a migrant, passing through Libya to Paris, who grew wings for a wild ascent, four flights of faith to pluck a child from a balcony, replace him in his family nest. Faithfulness leapt up from the ground, righteousness (for once) leant out of the sky and saw that child safe. Seconds of heart in mouth risk, a new lifetime of hope.
And I have read about a messiah who took off the wings of heaven and hit the ground, not running, but in the womb of a migrant girl called Mary. A split second of divine connection. A lifetime of human faithfulness. A death and resurrection where all blessed descriptions met in one holy kiss which lingers on the lips of humankind.
PRAYER:
God, today there are refugees in every land, desperate for someone, somewhere, sometime doing what is right, to grant the peace of good hope. For so many, seconds have turned into hours and into years. We too are desperate, for your favour, for what is good, for your kindly rule. Amen.
