Galatians 3: 23-26 (MSG)

23-24 Until the time when we were mature enough to respond freely in faith to the living God, we were carefully surrounded and protected by the Mosaic law. The law was like those Greek tutors, with which you are familiar, who escort children to school and protect them from danger or distraction, making sure the children will really get to the place they set out for.

25-27 (26) But now you have arrived at your destination: By faith in Christ you are in direct relationship with God.

“Are we nearly there yet?” You can hear the children bleating in the back of the car! And maybe you have been feeling the same as we have made our way painstakingly through Paul’s careful arguments about the Law and the Promise!

This rather tortuous journey has not been about proving a legal point; it has been about establishing the basis of our salvation, our relationship with God, our great homecoming.

In today’s short verses, Paul describes the history of his people as a journey, escorted by a good tutor (the Jewish Law) who would make sure that his pupils arrived safely at their school. There they learn the deepest truths of life — in this case, that Jesus Christ opens up for us a “direct relationship with God”.

That is our destination. That is what we were destined for. That is God’s promised intention for us. In the words of Augustine of Hippo, “For Thou hast made us for Thyself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee.”

We have arrived where we belong.

Prayer:

“Come I this day to God.

Come I this day to Christ.

Come I this day to the Spirit, the powerful One.

Come I this day with God.

Come I this day with Christ.

Come I this day with the Spirit, of healing balm.

God, Spirit, Jesus,

Come I this day

From the crown of my head

to the soles of my feet.

Come I with my reputation.

Come I with my testimony.

Lord Jesus, shelter me.”
