Luke 9: 57-62 (NRSVA)

57 As they were going along the road, someone said to him, ‘I will follow you wherever you go.’ 58 And Jesus said to him, ‘Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.’ 59 To another he said, ‘Follow me.’ But he said, ‘Lord, first let me go and bury my father.’ 60 But Jesus said to him, ‘Let the dead bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.’ 61 Another said, ‘I will follow you, Lord; but let me first say farewell to those at my home.’ 62 Jesus said to him, ‘No one who puts a hand to the plough and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.’

Some birds return time after time to the same tree, the same nest. Rebuilding it time and again to lay new eggs and build a new hope each spring and summer.

Some birds find a new place to lay their eggs and their heads every year, only staying long enough to ensure their charges can stand and fly before taking them off on an adventure they cannot yet imagine.

Jesus I think was more like the second bird, I wonder if the Spirit is more like the first bird. Perhaps God is both and also a third type of bird no-one has discovered yet.

Which type of bird are you today? Are you returning once again to rebuild something that needs love? Or exploring a new place ready to build with what you find? Whichever mode you find yourself in today know that God sees you and is there with you, ready to help.

PRAYER:

Dear God of nests old and new

Thank you that you are made up of so many elements

Help us to accept different parts of ourselves too

Be with us whatever we face today

Amen
