What if…
Acts 20
A young man named Eutychus was sitting in the window, and as Paul kept on talking, Eutychus got sleepier and sleepier, until he finally went sound asleep and fell from the third story to the ground…
Today is all about us. It’s about what we get out of this particular 24 hours. If something isn’t ‘hitting the spot’ for us, then we back out of it.
That’s why youth organisations find it hard to get leaders. It’s one of the (many) reasons why people no longer join the church. It’s what I think of as the “Woolworth” factor – our pick’n’mix approach to life that avoids commitment in favour of entertainment.
And we even approach worship that way. We want louder music, more involvement – short, attention-grabbing insights.
We want to be entertained.
Eutychus-syndrome wouldn’t happen today. We wouldn’t put ourselves in the position of having to listen to someone speak for so long that we’d fall asleep - and fall out a window. We’d walk out and go somewhere else. Or fiddle with our phone. Or turn on the headphones.
Commitment involves sticking around when things are tough as well as when they’re easy. It asks more of us than simply our presence alone.
What if….
What if, while I sit and listen to a sermon
Or Bible study,
Friends are having a belter of a time?
What if…
While I prepare for Brownies, or the Youth Group,
For the toddlers or the Guild –
Others are free for coffee and a blether…
What if…
I just did the good bits
The fun bits
Left the rest to one side…
What if…
What if you, Lord Jesus,
Had come to us part time…
Walked away when things got uncomfortable –
Chose to eat only with friends – Went for laughter instead of tears…
What if…
Lord of deepest commitment - show us how to commit.
