What did we expect
Listen to this daily worship
Hosea 10: 12-13 (NRSVA)
12 Sow for yourselves righteousness;
reap steadfast love;
break up your fallow ground;
for it is time to seek the Lord,
that he may come and rain righteousness upon you.13 You have ploughed wickedness,
you have reaped injustice,
you have eaten the fruit of lies.
Because you have trusted in your power
and in the multitude of your warriors,
These verses in Hosea, like the ones from Micah yesterday, lead us to reflect on the consequences of an uncaring, and acquisitive culture. They speak to us over thousands of years but feel much closer. The themes of injustice and dishonesty and a sowing without reaping echo uncomfortably today.
What did we expect
giving with one hand and taking with the other.
What did we expect
praising a few and leaving many to suffer?
What did we expect
when we asked for innovation but accepted the same old
what did we expect
when we mined for food’s gold?
What did we expect
when we sang an old song with new words
what did we expect
when the warnings went unheard.
What did we expect…
you can’t put an ice cube in a drink
without it getting wet…
The prophet tells us to change our perspective
to take a new directive
that’s caring and protective
that’s not all ‘gain, gain, gain’
forecast says righteousness is going to rain
let’s respond to God’s love
and go with the grain!
PRAYER:
Dear God
Make us more loving
more compassionate
more gracious and forgiving
and more generous
giving time to each other,
to recognise your face
in all those we meet.
Amen.
