A voice from the crowd
Listen to this daily worship
Psalm 36: 5-9 (NRSVA)
5 Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens,
your faithfulness to the clouds.
6 Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains,
your judgements are like the great deep;
you save humans and animals alike, O Lord.7 How precious is your steadfast love, O God!
All people may take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
8 They feast on the abundance of your house,
and you give them drink from the river of your delights.
9 For with you is the fountain of life;
in your light we see light.
This week Laura has reflected on the themes that are in our daily scripture readings and linked them to key events during Holy Week in a series of seven monologues that invite us to see how this week resonates throughout scripture and into our lives today.
“Praise the Lord! His Love is steadfast! He has remembered his people.”
What a day! I’m still so excited! I seen Jesus today. You know, the man everyone is talking about, the teacher who has been performing all the miracles, the one they are saying is the Messiah!
Between you and me I’ve heard rumours that the reason he came to Jerusalem is to overthrow the Romans. Now that would be something…
The city was totally buzzing, everyone was out trying to catch a glimpse of Jesus. We all lined the streets, packed tight together. It was hot, and I could smell the sweat of the folk standing next to me. So many voices surrounding me. It was crazy. I kept getting pushed around as more and more people tried to get to the front, all hoping to see Jesus. I had a good view and I was determined no one was going to take my spot, so I stood rigid despite all the jostling.
Then, there was a roar, Jesus had arrived! He was here. Like me, people had brought palm leaves and we all started waving them. We were all shouting hosanna! It was amazing standing there together…feeling that joy…that expectation. You would think that God himself had come to town.
He was making his way down the street. I could see he was riding a donkey. I did think that was a bit weird, what kind of Messiah rides a donkey? I heard someone say next to me that it was a publicity stunt, but I don’t think so. On that donkey he was one of us and as he came by me, our eyes met, he smiled, and my heart jumped. In that moment, I felt that he knew me, just a face in the crowd but he knew me…
PRAYER:
Forgive us Lord that, like the crowds, we will follow Jesus on Palm Sunday, but we find it hard to keep following him when we are faced with the price of commitment.
Fill us with your steadfast love Lord
Amen.
