Unfolding service

Luke 24: 32-35 (NRSVA)
32 They said to each other, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?’ 33 That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. 34 They were saying, ‘The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!’ 35 Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.
The first Preacher I heard that opened the Scriptures to me was a man named Brian Moore. He looked much older than he was, and I’m sure if a big gust of wind came along it would have blown him away! But Mr Moore was solid, he was steadfast and his teaching sermons on a Sunday evening had me enthralled. I couldn’t get enough of him, and I am sure he was invited to serve many of the big, rich churches in Northern Ireland, but he chose to stay in the middle of a poor, violent community in the Shankill Road in Belfast. I often wish he was still alive, still teaching, because I would be sitting with my pen and notebook again, soaking up his wisdom. I hope you can say you have had this kind of experience too… but what was the point of Mr Moore’s hard work as he researched and phrased, offered illustrations and explanations week in and week out?
Firstly, I believe he was being faithful to his vocation as a preacher and teacher. Secondly, I believe he was participating in the ongoing unfolding of the Kingdom of God as he shared his messages, calling folks to follow Christ Jesus, reminding us of our responsibilities as followers, and urging us to walk with the poor people, the outcast people, the beloved of the Lord, all the while digging deeper into the scriptures and growing in love for God.
This week we have seen one of the patterns of God, the primary pattern is suffering, death, resurrection — repeat!
Suffering, death, resurrection — repeat!
Another pattern is unfolding, seeing, responding — repeat!
Unfolding, seeing, responding — repeat!
What are your purposes in receiving the unfolding of the Kingdom of God?
PRAYER:
Gracious God, thank You for faithful servants who participate in the unfolding of Your Kingdom. May we be willing to be those servants too as we offer our response to Your Love. Amen.
