Transformation through tears
Listen to this daily worship
Psalm 126 (NIVUK)
1 When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion,
we were like those who dreamed.
2 Our mouths were filled with laughter,
our tongues with songs of joy.
Then it was said among the nations,
‘The Lord has done great things for them.’
3 The Lord has done great things for us,
and we are filled with joy.4 Restore our fortunes, Lord,
like streams in the Negev.
5 Those who sow with tears
will reap with songs of joy.
6 Those who go out weeping,
carrying seed to sow,
will return with songs of joy,
carrying sheaves with them.
If anyone can make good out of a bad situation, it is God…
In today’s Psalm, we read of a God who is in the business of restoration. Like the shoot that rises from the trunk of a fallen tree. God can even use our tears as seeds that will grow into an abundant harvest.
The psalmist writes of a God who encourages people to weed as they go out to plant. God does not need us to have a stiff upper lip. God does not want us to pretend that everything in the garden or field is rosy. God wants to be with us, even in our most vulnerable moments, and to turn even the most painful and difficult of times into opportunities for growth and rebirth.
Let us pray…
God of renewal and restoration,
we give thanks for the new beginnings that you offer to us
through your grace and your generosity.
We praise you for the assurance
that the pains of the past, can stay in the past
and that our tears can be transformed
into a harvest of joy and peace.
Thank you, Lord.
Amen.
