Matthew 13: 31-32 (NRSVA)
31 He put before them another parable: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in his field; 32 it is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.’
Plants are cool, and trees are amazing! Some of them are lucky enough to become enormous. They surpass humans in size and longevity, if we let them live.
Birds however, on the whole, live much less time than we humans do. But in their short lives they forget their differences and all find comfort, safety and rest in these great trees.
Who are we to think God cares less about us than a bird?
Who are we to think God cares more about our human self than any other human?
Let’s grow enormous trees.
Let’s build a variety of nests.
Let's make this world one where birds and trees and humans can exist together with God and all be the better for it.
PRAYER:
Dear God of trees and us
Forgive us for what we have done to this world you created
Forgive us for what we have done to the animals you entrusted to the world
Forgive us for what we do to each other
Help us to build a world where all is set right again
Amen
