​He blessed the seventh day and set it apart as a special day because by that day he had completed his creation and stopped working.

​Lord we thank you for the opportunity of work, the chance to use our gifts and energies, for the dignity, independence and sense of belonging that comes with it. We pray for those who are without all of this through no fault of their own.  

We thank you too for times of rest,  when strength can be restored, when we can have time to be with friends and family, to be of help to others, to share interests and activities.  For those whose years of working has ceased we thank you for the gift of retirement. We pray for those whose present life seems lonely without the daily companionship of a workplace.  

Strengthen those facing the challenge of spending more time with those specially close, of rekindling old friendships that were neglected in the years of working and of making new friendship, as old interests are renewed and as new interests are developed.
