It’s Time to Act
Listen to this daily worship
Acts 2: 16-18 (NRSVA)
16 No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:
17 “In the last days it will be, God declares,
that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh,
and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
and your young men shall see visions,
and your old men shall dream dreams.
18 Even upon my slaves, both men and women,
in those days I will pour out my Spirit;
and they shall prophesy.
Recently at the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland many who attended were encouraged by the vision put forward to create at least 100 new congregations within the next ten years. But it was agreed that they had to be new, not the same as we have had. They need to be open to the new thing that God is doing in our lives and in our world.
Today we are being invited to reflect upon the idea of expectation.
If we are willing to listen to the vision of others with a spirit of expectation, we might discover God more fully. He might speak to us not only through people but through a dream or a long held vision. Perhaps we need the courage to share a vision and open a faith door for a friend or a member of our family, or our Kirk Session? Once again Peter’s words ring across the centuries: “We’re not drunk its barely 9’o’clock in the morning.” (See verse 15).
Our Father
Fill us with expectation
Open our ears and eyes
To hear and see the new possibilities
Inspire us to believe
In our dreams and visions
Let fear and distrust perish
Let love and trust flourish
Turn our hearts to serve the poor
And may the poor in spirit
Become our mentors in humility and trust.
