The Rocky Land

Deuteronomy 32

Those who worship Yahweh have always recognised the Eternal God’s stability and equated that faithfulness and security with solid rock.

Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord;
let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before him with thanksgiving
and extol him with music and song.

For the Lord is the great God,
the great King above all gods.
In his hand are the depths of the earth,
and the mountain peaks belong to him.
The sea is his, for he made it,
and his hands formed the dry land.

Psalm 95 vs 1 - 5

Faithful, fathering and mothering God –

Older than the very rocks of our land.

You are!  and are more permanent too.

They say Scotland’s rocks are 3000 million years old

Yet it was you who laid them down,

and carved them with fire and ice;

with wind and with weather.

They have seen all of human history.

Onto the rocky mountain you took Moses and gave him the laws to help people live in community.

Onto the rocky mountains you took disciples to witness your glory.

Rocks stand firm against the tide of constant change.

Rock is the underpinning of our structures.

Deep in the rock the energy we need to live, is stored.

Lord, I can say with the Psalmist David – You are my Rock,

and on you I build my life.

You are the firm foundation of all that is, and with you I feel secure.

Amen
