The lure of ‘eat, drink and be merry’
Luke 12: 16-21
6 And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. 17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’
18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’
20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’
21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”
Lord God,
we hear it all the time:-
‘only a few more years to go,
and then I can do what I want,
put my feet up,
take it easy,
eat, drink and be merry.’
Meanwhile we trudge through work grudgingly,
longing for that day,
when we can do exactly as we please,
when life will become all that it is meant to be…..
But as the rich fool discovered,
the reality is that we might never reach that golden age…..
Forgive us, Lord,
for believing that true happiness lies in being free from work,
and being able to do just as we please……
Help us to see that our work is a precious gift from you,
a means in which you offer us dignity and fulfilment,
as we share our gifts with others….
And if we are blessed to reach retirement age,
then may we show our heartfelt gratitude by continuing to work for you,
using our gifts and talents,
time and commitment,
for the building of your church…..
AMEN
