The Lord is King!
Listen to this daily worship
Psalm 96: 10 (NRSVA)
10
Say among the nations, ‘The Lord is king!
The world is firmly established; it shall never be moved.
He will judge the peoples with equity.’
I pick up my morning paper (you might open your latest news app) and I sip my coffee. It’s the most ordinary thing to do in the world, you’d think. But I don’t know about you, but I’m more and more having to mentally prepare myself for reading about more terror, more bad news, more extreme beyond extreme. It feels like the world is losing control.
You look around and there isn’t really any leader to pinpoint us to safety, it seems. Even the leaders of nations, of governments, of institutions, are all struggling to safely guide us through. Yet we try and find some security in things that cannot ever give it.
Yet here is a three-thousand-year-old writer teaching us a firm truth that should steady our feet, and keep us firmly secure: The Lord reigns, he says, and the world is firmly established; it cannot be moved. What the psalmist is giving us here is what we’re all looking for: the only stability that endures. God has got this.
Whilst earthly kingdoms and domains might shatter, God’s foundation remains steadfast and in our lives that stability gives us comfort and security, assuring us that our faith is rooted in the reigning God who is unchanging, and who upholds the world on his sovereign shoulders. The Lord reigns.
Prayer:
Lord, would you teach me to stand firm on this promise
That you are sovereign.
That you are eternal
That my world
their world
our world
is firmly established
and cannot be moved
because you reign Lord,
Now and forever,
Amen
