The lone traveller
Psalm 23
A psalm of David.
1 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk
through the darkest valley,[a]
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.
Lord,
I think it’s the loneliness that sometimes overwhelms me.
Pilgrimage can feel such a solitary activity
It calls for a different mindset
You invite us to switch off the Sat Nav of modernity
Change lanes
Reduce speed
Take the slip road
Slow right down
Park the car
Take up the cross
And check out the ancient paths on foot
This kind of activity calls for courage,
especially when everyone else seems to be using the motorway.
Lord,
Its difficult being the lone traveller,
challenging questioning the “status quo”
Too often I feel I’m walking on my own
I ask myself - “ So where are the others?”
Suddenly I’m surprised
I find myself in good company
I discover a picnic table with food and wine
And an invitation from yourself to join the party
I discover there are more people on the road than I could ever imagine
Thank you Lord for your sustaining love
