The Fear of God
Psalm 111: 7-10
7 The works of his hands are faithful and just;
all his precepts are trustworthy.
8 They are established for ever and ever,
to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness.
9 He sent redemption to his people;
he has commanded his covenant for ever.
Holy and awesome is his name.
10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
all those who practise it have a good understanding.
His praise endures for ever.
It’ll put the fear of God into you.
Seeing two raindrops meet on a window pane.
One old hand steadying another.
The all clear.
It’ll put the fear of God into you.
That smile you could see with your eyes shut.
The words you know she is about to say.
A small photograph.
It’ll put the fear of God into you.
What they’re saying on the radio.
That envelope unopened in your drawer.
The knock on the door.
It’ll put the fear of God into you.
That song you thought you had forgotten.
The old key in the same place.
The look of recognition that flashed across his face.
It’ll put the fear of God into you.
God’s love, that tells us not to be afraid.
God love, that tells us there is no need to cower.
God’s love, that fills us with awe.
It’ll put the fear of God into you.
Dear God,
When we ‘fear the Lord’,
it is not because we are afraid of you
but because language fails to grasp the excitement, the awe, the anticipation, the mind bending nature of it all,
the gratitude,
respect.
Knowing you for who you are.
Amen.
