That Deeper Gladness
Matthew 6:16-18
“And whenever you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites,
for they disfigure their faces so as to show others that they are fasting.
Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.
But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face,
so that your fasting may be seen not by others
but by your Father who is in secret;
and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”
I heard that Mother Teresa stood at the convent door each morning
to watch the Sisters leave for the tasks of the day.
If they did not have a smile on their face,
she would not let them go out.
God of beauty and playfulness,
as people of faith,
save us from grim worthiness
or a duty without grace,
that gives life neither to ourselves
nor to those we seek to serve.
Like a child’s artwork
sprinkle us with a glittering gladness,
that others may sense
that deeper gladness
that comes from knowing you.
Amen.
