Deuteronomy 5: 12-15
12 “‘Observe the Sabbath and keep it holy, as I, the Lord your God, have commanded you. 13 You have six days in which to do your work, 14 but the seventh day is a day of rest dedicated to me. On that day no one is to work—neither you, your children, your slaves, your animals, nor the foreigners who live in your country. Your slaves must rest just as you do. 15 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt, and that I, the Lord your God, rescued you by my great power and strength. That is why I command you to observe the Sabbath.
Last year and this I had some difficulty finding a diary with the week starting on Sunday. The default now seems to be that the week starts on Monday, and finishes with the weekend, Saturday / Sunday often squashed together, literally at the end.
When I was a child in the Highlands, absolutely nothing happened on Sunday except church – my father was a minister and had a service in each of his three linked parishes, two in the morning and one in the evening, and my mother taught one of the Sunday Schools. It was a full day, without any thought of shopping, outings, football – how things have changed!
Well, I still think the week starts on Sunday. I know that work consumes the week for many folk and they crave their leisure, and of course worship and personal devotions are not confined to one day, or one place, but the transformation of Sunday into a day like any other seems to me to be a loss.
The pause, the space, the meeting with fellow Christians for Sunday worship, these set me up for the week, prepare me, refresh me, for the week’s journey, whatever that may bring.
God of beginnings,
God of the first day of the week,
God of the Day of Resurrection,
give me pause,
give me time to reflect,
give me time to prepare.
Send me into the new week’s journey
refreshed and ready.
