Starting on our way
John 4: 48-50
48 Then Jesus said to him, ‘Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe.’ 49 The official said to him, ‘Sir, come down before my little boy dies.’ 50 Jesus said to him, ‘Go; your son will live.’ The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and started on his way.
There are folk who are gifted at DIY. I am not one of them. Perhaps that’s why it may be easier for me, than for some people to recognise that there are a lot of things I can’t do on my own. So I am willing to believe in a God who is capable of changing me when I struggle to change myself.
God was staging interventions long before they became fashionable therapy speak. But that doesn’t mean it’s easy to recognise how and when he is intervening in our lives. Sometimes all we can cling to is the gift of faith - especially in the days when the ‘signs and wonders’ are scarce.
Lord,
Thank you for caring
enough
to sit down with me
when my frail human condition overwhelms me
Help me look at this thing called faith
This beautiful, awkward, spiky,
wonderfully inconvenient gift
which just won’t fit neatly into its packaging.
Help me to allow it out of its wrapping,
and into my life
Help me to stop resisting the change which comes
when I allow myself the freedom to believe.
Start me on the way, Lord
that I too might go
and live.
