Stand still
Psalm 24
The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it,
the world, and all who live in it;
for he founded it on the seas
and established it on the waters.Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord?
Who may stand in his holy place?
The one who has clean hands and a pure heart,
who does not trust in an idol
or swear by a false god.They will receive blessing from the Lord
and vindication from God their Saviour.
Such is the generation of those who seek him,
who seek your face, God of Jacob.Lift up your heads, you gates;
be lifted up, you ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
Who is this King of glory?
The Lord strong and mighty,
the Lord mighty in battle.
Lift up your heads, you gates;
lift them up, you ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
Who is he, this King of glory?
The Lord Almighty –
he is the King of glory.
Stand still, and let the glen teach you.
Six hours of silence
in a Scottish glen,
waiting on God.
Lord, that's an experience
to remember and savour.
Stand still, and let the glen teach you.
The rocks and the hillside
spoke of life that is hard
shaped by millenia
of fire and ice
ofwind and rain.
It's the tough days
that shape us, Lord.
Life is hard;
but God is tougher.
Stand still, and let the glen teach you.
The tree hung precariously
from the river bank
roots holding
but for how long?
Life feels fragile at times, Lord,
lived one breath at a time
till that last whisper;
but till then, keep me fruitful.
Stand still, and let the glen teach you.
A tree shelters me
with old gnarled branches
and new greenery
twigs and leaves.
A living family tree inviting
prayers of thanks for parents now gone
prayers of blessing for children
and grandchildren
spreading out gently into new worlds.
Stand still and let the glen teach you.
I remember it well, Lord.
Today, Lord, I will find an open space
by a field or hillside
river or seashore.
I will stand still
and let creation
teach me with silent eloquence. AMEN
