Some Act to Follow
Acts 2:42-47
42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
‘Awesome’ – overused, under-experienced,
just like all our easy talk of God.
This is simply awe – and then some!
‘Wearisome’ – over the days of waiting,
now a golden gospel scene is playing,
staying on this urban screen.
‘Lonesome’– overcome, over the exile,
as these Way-goers walk with God
and share their lives with one another.
‘Handsome’ – over the centuries, a word
for generosity, for grace, for godly beauty
shown in every hopeless place.
‘Winsome’ – overture to watchers, seekers:
economic testimony, harmony, humility,
spelling out the meaning of ‘be saved’.
Pray
God, please overhaul our poor ideas of how to live.
Bring us into touch with others who will share with us
a bigger vision and a more immediate obedience,
and banish ‘hopeless’ from our tongues. Amen.
