Shaping every opportunity
Listen to this daily worship
Ephesians 5: 15-20 (NRSVA)
15 Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise, 16 making the most of the time, because the days are evil. 17 So do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, 20 giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Remember who you are. This was a favourite phrase of one of my trainers back in the day. He was, of course, reminding me that, as a young doctor people had expectations of how I would look, what I would speak like, and how I would comport myself.
I’m not very good at taking advice. I don’t think playing a “part” or “playing to the crowd” is, in the long term, sustainable. I do think though, that accepting, really accepting, and understanding where you are on your path and who you ARE on that path is important so “remember who you are” is very apt in that context.
Often we are placed on the path we are placed on because it is where we are meant to be at this stage of our journey, for some of us it’s because we have relentlessly pursued a dream or an ambition, for others it’s because of where we have been led. The opportunity presented, the contemplation and the peace of God at the decision. Of course, sometimes you just have to jump and sometimes you’re pushed but brothers and sisters, there is a parachute of love that floats above us all.
Be true to the God who made you. That’s the true you, not the battered and bruised and tired and disillusioned you, the perfect amazing you that the creator sees. See yourself through those eyes and remember who you are.
Everything else follows.
Every dawn you are made new, throw off the old clothes of yesterday and live the true created, perfect you. That way the decisions you make today don’t need to be coloured by anything other than your true self, set free by grace to do the next thing and the thing after that — in tune with the creator and in harmony with the world. Remember who you are.
PRAYER:
Let me see myself as I really am
Not a body of flesh and bone
But a spirit inside
Let your Spirit entwine
Let’s become new
Let me live and work and love and always remind me who I am.
