Set apart
Jeremiah 1:5
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
Reflection
The notion that God has loved and known us from the very beginning can provide us with a sense of being held from the very start with a continuity throughout our life. On the other hand, the idea that somehow being ‘set apart’ from that moment of conception might be a mixed blessing and may not always be a source of comfort. Jeremiah did not have an easy time of if telling people that things were about to collapse about their ears and messengers of catastrophe are not always received well. For the listener the challenge is to listen well and out of the lead offered by the words of the prophet good things may come.
Prayer
Lead me to listen carefully, God.
Let me hear what needs to be said.
May I always be a person of hope even if words are doomladen.
Lead me to speak truthfully, God.
Let me speak with integrity and wisdom.
May I always be a person of honesty even when this is hard to do.
Lead me to look clearly, God.
Let me open my eyes to a deeper meaning.
May I always be a person searching for insight even when things are obscured.
Amen.
