Relevance
1Corinthians 13:1 – 3
“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.”
The hymn says, “The Church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord,” so we will take it as read that all we pray for in and through the Church we do so in the name of Jesus.
We pray for the Church of Scotland to speak with relevance in our time.
Father God, in a world where it is difficult enough to sustain your work against a backdrop where secular ideas seem to hold sway, we pray for the Church of Scotland to be conscientious about the need to communicate with relevance. In an age when fads and fashions change so quickly give it the ability to speak into the present with the message that is eternal. Hold it from falling for the persuasive temptation to be contemporary for that alone and enable it to share Jesus’ love for all people through gracious attitudes, merciful deeds and a passion for peace.”
Amen
