Psalm 72: 1

1 Give the king your justice, O God,
    and your righteousness to a king’s son.

What would it be like to live in a world where all our leaders were righteous in the biblical sense, in other words, full of a passion for justice? Not the justice which cries out for revenge or punishment, but the justice which uplifts the poor and crushes the oppressor. 

This is not the world we live in. It never has been. But it is the world that should be. As Christians, as a church, we can help others to re-imagine the world. But first we need to re-imagine ourselves. 

 

Lord,

 

All those years of institutional power and what have we to show for it? 

Is the world kinder, better, safer, fairer?

Maybe a little. 

It is not our call to judge the past, 

but to serve the present.

So here we are, closer to the margins than before, perhaps.

Less powerful, 

or maybe just less full of our own power. 

 

It’s roomier out here, quieter. 

Out here we have time and space to listen, to observe, 

to experience life on the margins.

 

Out here we don’t just see the need for justice, we feel it.

We demand it. 

 

Give us the courage to speak truth to power, 

and where power still rests in us, 

to use it with grace and righteousness.
