A psalm for times of trouble

Psalm 138 (NIV)
1 I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart;
before the “gods” I will sing your praise.
2 I will bow down toward your holy temple
and will praise your name
for your unfailing love and your faithfulness,
for you have so exalted your solemn decree
that it surpasses your fame.
3 When I called, you answered me;
you greatly emboldened me.4 May all the kings of the earth praise you, Lord,
when they hear what you have decreed.
5 May they sing of the ways of the Lord,
for the glory of the Lord is great.6 Though the Lord is exalted, he looks kindly on the lowly;
though lofty, he sees them from afar.
7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble,
you preserve my life.
You stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes;
with your right hand you save me.
8 The Lord will vindicate me;
your love, Lord, endures forever—
do not abandon the works of your hands.
Do you sometimes go through a crisis of faith? The headlines are depressing, the pandemic frightening, we feel small and we feel powerless. It can be hard for some to keep faith when the daily infection rates across the world relentlessly rise and our lives are effectively in a holding pattern. We are indeed walking in the midst of trouble.
Our parents and grandparents have been there before us. They have lived through several wars, a pandemic, a depression and on a more personal level ill health and loss.
The stories of faith and courage from the previous generations are truly inspiring. People who have survived through the worst possible circumstances, circumstances we can’t even imagine and gained the strength to do so from their faith. Praising the Lord for each new day and each small blessing.
Times of trouble can test faith but also ignite it. In recent months online churches have welcomed those seeking something, they may not know exactly what, but something.
Times of trouble can allow us to look at things differently, to grow if we look for opportunities to do so.
This is a psalm for times of trouble, David had them, previous generations had them and we have them. The situations are different but the answer is the same through the ages. Your love Lord endures forever, do not abandon the works of your hand.
PRAYER:
Lord, my prayers are really not amongst the best
They are not the most eloquent or moving
They will never be confused with a Psalm
They are however from the heart
I praise you with all my heart
That’s what you ask?
Not for perfection
Just for a heart
