A Promised Presence

2 Peter 1:16-19 (NIVUK)
16 For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eye-witnesses of his majesty. 17 He received honour and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.’ 18 We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.
19 We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.
We all know and enjoy the poem ‘Footprints’ telling the story of how a man is walking along a beach during bad times and asks God why at that point he feels as if he is walking on his own and God is not walking side by side with him to help. The answer we know of course is that God replies that there is only one set of footprints because He is carrying the man.
In Remembrance Week I reflect on the many occasions when I have felt during a difficult operational tour that God has not been present and yet in hindsight He gently reminds me that He was carrying us all through it despite our blindness at that time. This revelation can come during the operation or years later. For me this is the prophetic message Peter is referring to and which shines light into darkness. It is a true message of hope and healing because it comes from God.
Abba Father, thank you for being with us and carrying us through difficult times even when we don’t know it. Thank you also for reminding us that You love us and want what is best for us as Your children — may we know you are well pleased with us despite our imperfections as people of faith through Jesus. Strengthen us we pray in our faith and practice. Amen.
