Luke 15: 20-24 (NRSVA)

20 So he set off and went to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion; he ran and put his arms around him and kissed him. 21 Then the son said to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.” 22 But the father said to his slaves, “Quickly, bring out a robe—the best one—and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23 And get the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate; 24 for this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found!” And they began to celebrate.

I am prodigal.

Recklessly I gave in to his pleading

his importuning,

against my instincts,

my judgment,

my custom and practice.

I succumbed to his beseeching

his demands.

I ignored the hurt of his rejection.

Was I wise or foolish?

I know not.

But I do know that some things we only learn the hard way!

I am prodigal.

Recklessly I have given of my love,

my desire for reconciliation,

my time,

in waiting,

in wondering.

Wearing my vigil like a hair shirt

until his return.

He returns and my prodigal love is waiting:

extravagant,

unrestrained

profligate.

My love enfolds him

my arms carry him home

my joy redeems him.

We must celebrate!

PRAYER:

Loving heavenly Father,

help us to believe

that your love waits for us

however long we stay away.

That your arms are stretched out to hold us

however much we disappoint you.

That your joy in us is full

whenever we choose to turn

and spend time with you, Amen

Lent Disciplines

A Symbolic Action to do sometime this week that suits you. As a time of prayer hold your hands out in front of you. Look at your left hand and take a moment to hold the things that you are grateful for. Look at your right hand and take a moment to hold the things that concern you. Then bring your hands together, fingers interlaced, to bring it all before God.
