Prayers from Kenya
Ecc. 12:1
Remember your creator in the days of your youth, before the day of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, “I find no pleasure in them”
Parenting and community responsibility. My engagement with the youth has shown me that to a large extent the parents/guardians have abdicated their authority and responsibility over the youth/teenagers. Parenting in the slum context has not been taken seriously due to its dynamics. The importance of parenting in the life of a young person can not be overemphasized. This role has however been unfortunately left in the hands of teachers and pastors just to give examples. Family moral fabric is being slowly destroyed because of this. There is a danger in what kind of families these young people will then raise up. The African communal spirit which embraced all people within a set environment is fading off as well. The community seem to care very little on the plight of the youth. The love for neighbour which includes the youth is wanting. It is the due of the entire community to care for its youth for posterity.
May the parents discharge their God-given roles, duties and responsibilities to the youth. May the spirit of Ubuntu/community be restored in the urban slums
