A prayer of getting ready
Listen to this daily worship
Deuteronomy 31: 7-8 (NRSVA)
7 Then Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel: ‘Be strong and bold, for you are the one who will go with this people into the land that the Lord has sworn to their ancestors to give them; and you will put them in possession of it. 8 It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.’
Apparently, the commandment “Do not fear” or “Do not be afraid” is the most common in the Christian scriptures. Which is all very well and good but, when we are heading into the unknown — be it on a journey or a life decision — it is impossible not to experience a little trepidation. Any decision to do one thing is, by definition, not to do a myriad other things. We have made a choice and we will face the consequences: good or bad. All we can do is prepare as best we can, and remind ourselves of God’s constant presence.
PRAYER:
Constant companion,
I know I need to get ready,
ready for the next step of life,
but I am hesitant…
Fear of the unknown is a real thing,
no matter how many times you invite us not to be afraid!
Help us to recognise what it is — exactly — we are afraid of,
and to share it with you;
so we might know we are not alone,
that fear can never have the final word,
for we are held in your love
— whatever happens —
and your perfect love holds all our fears:
praise be, indeed! AMEN.
