Matthew 7: 7-11 (NIVUK)

7 ‘Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

9 ‘Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!

If ever there was a passage which made clear the goodness of Father God it is this one!

I know sometimes we have abstract pieces of art to look at, Mondrian's Composition with Red, Blue, and Yellow being a great example. They afford us the opportunity to explore and dig into hidden meanings. But not so in these verses! They are absolutely clear. Your Father in heaven is a giver, a giver of good gifts, a generous giver of good gifts who, quite frankly, will blow your socks off!

This painting is clear. The Father’s heart and character are compassion, love, gentleness, care, protection and guidance. What kind of artistry is created from this heart? Children who love and adore Him. A church which is passionate to reach those who are fatherless, who don’t yet know the wonder and joy of a life in the family of God. And a people who come and ask for bread and fish.

Are you asking Father God for bread and fish? If not actual bread and fish, what then? Whether for you or someone you know, come and do what Jesus is talking about. Ask because the Father is painting a picture and wants you involved in it and He wants to give you what you need to be in it too.

Prayer:

Father of hope, we ask for hope, we seek hope, we find hope.

Father of life everlasting, we ask for everlasting life, we seek everlasting life, we find it in Jesus.

Father of love, we ask for love, we seek love, we find love generously given to us.

Thank you that you are clearly and simply a generous and giving God who is good. Come and do more than we could possibly hope, dream or imagine in us and through us for your glory, Amen.
