John 15: 9-11 (NIVUK)

9 ‘As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love.11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.

“Sometimes since I’ve been in the garden I’ve looked up through the trees at the sky and I have had a strange feeling of being happy…”

So declares the previously melancholy hero of the classic tale The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, as she discovers the beauty of a hidden garden and the true friendship she can experience within its walls. The garden has been planted as a work of love, and it brings joy to the lonely children who find it – caught up in the nourishing beauty of all the life it holds.

The Father extends an invitation to us into His garden. The gate is unlocked to all who would choose to come in and joyfully explore the life He has created for us. It is full of colour and variety and song. It is sheltered from the heat of the day. It holds all we need to be nourished and thrive. It is full of joy and laughter because it is a place we were made to belong.

Prayer:

Father – may the secret place be like a garden where I can run barefoot

On cool soft grass without fear of thorns.

May I cartwheel into your loving arms

Knowing that all I plant here

Will be nourished in soil that you have tended.

Amen
