Peaceful slumber
Listen to this daily worship
Psalm 4 (NRSVA)
1 Answer me when I call, O God of my right!
You gave me room when I was in distress.
Be gracious to me, and hear my prayer.2 How long, you people, shall my honour suffer shame?
How long will you love vain words, and seek after lies?Selah
3 But know that the Lord has set apart the faithful for himself;
the Lord hears when I call to him.4 When you are disturbed, do not sin;
ponder it on your beds, and be silent.Selah
5 Offer right sacrifices,
and put your trust in the Lord.6 There are many who say, ‘O that we might see some good!
Let the light of your face shine on us, O Lord!’
7 You have put gladness in my heart
more than when their grain and wine abound.8 I will both lie down and sleep in peace;
for you alone, O Lord, make me lie down in safety.
I have talked a lot about active peace so far this week but here is a passage which reminds us to consider resting peace. That kind of peace where you stop moving and thinking and simply rest your body. Notice I didn’t say to stop making. For some, carving out the space for this peace can be the hardest thing they make all day. It can also be the most important. Jesus knew that the body needed looking after: from good food, to good rest.
God is with us as we wake and go about our day, and God is with us when we fall asleep. Whether we fall asleep in a comfy bed, a cramped bed, or no bed. Whether we fall asleep under a solid roof, a leaky roof, or no roof.
This winter pray for peace and for safe sleep to all those who are in need of it.
PRAYER:
Dear God of sleepers
Help our communities to make new and better solutions
to keep everyone safe and cared for this winter
Teach us to value rest and to value peace
Amen
