Our hearts are free

Acts 16:25-31

About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everybody’s chains came loose. The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted, “Don’t harm yourself! We are all here!”

The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”

Song

Long my imprisoned spirit lay
Fast bound in sin and nature’s night;
Thine eye diffused a quickening ray-
I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.
(Charles Wesley)

Prayer

Heavenly Father there is so much to keep us imprisoned
Fear and doubt,
Anxious thoughts and painful memories
There are no bars
No locks
But we are held captive nevertheless

Thank you Father for not giving us a spirit of fear
But one of power and love and a sound mind
So we lift our praises to you
And the song soars affirming your glory
No prison can hold it
We tremble before you
Bow down and fall at your feet
And by your grace
Our hearts are free
