Ephesians 3: 5-6

5 In former generations this mystery was not made known to humankind, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: 6 that is, the Gentiles have become fellow-heirs, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

Not all of St Paul’s listeners would have been delighted by the revelation that the promise made to the Jews was to be extended to the Gentiles. It’s one thing to accept that the ‘other’ be treated kindly, but it’s a different matter entirely to be told that they are to be ‘one body’ with you. Re-imaging church isn’t about making the rest of the world fit our template, it’s about letting God continue to shape the body of the church according to his design.

God of healing and wholeness

We are the body beautiful

Or we could be.

Perhaps we need to look in the mirror a little less and get out more

Enjoy the feeling of our limbs learning to move together,

like children do.

Find out what each bit can do, and celebrate it.

Try a twist, a jump, a run,

and then have a nice long nap.

Trusting that even as we rest you will be guiding our cells in re-growth and renewal

Filling our expanding brains with dreams and wonders

So that we awake refreshed, ready to find out more about what today’s body can do.

Amen.
