Old Paths new Shoes
Listen to this daily worship
Jeremiah 6:16 (NIVUK)
This is what the Lord says:
‘Stand at the crossroads and look;
ask for the ancient paths,
ask where the good way is, and walk in it,
and you will find rest for your souls.
But you said, “We will not walk in it.”
In the midst of a world where there is nothing but unrest, the prophet Jeremiah is told by the Lord to go and stand at the crossroads and do three things — and rest will follow.
He’s to look.
He’s to ask for the old paths.
Then he’s to walk in that way, and he will find rest for his soul.
I think this is good advice for anyone looking for a safe road to travel. Now here is the thing. It’s interesting to discern what the old way looks like. Is it covered up and overgrown and hard to find — the road less travelled — thus you have to look for it?
Or is it easily found because it is a well worn track that others have used. Thus you’re drawn to it? One thing is for sure while the path might be hidden or obvious, it can never be exactly the same journey that is made by everyone. The path may be worn but the environment will have changed.
It might be wise to wear new shoes. Shoes that are sturdy and not worn through. Shoes that will see you through the journey. Shoes that will carry with them the gospel of peace.
PRAYER:
Lord,
Give me the grace to learn from others
When I face a crossroads in my life
Help me keep my focus
For I am easily tempted to try new ways
To move out on cross country adventures
Only to find the terrain too difficult to traverse
And my feet bogged down in the mud
Give me the humility to choose, to seek out
The old path, the reliable route
Walking in your shoes following your footsteps
