Psalm 34: 1-8 (NIVUK)

1 I will extol the Lord at all times;
    his praise will always be on my lips.
2 I will glory in the Lord;
    let the afflicted hear and rejoice.
3 Glorify the Lord with me:
    let us exalt his name together.

4 I sought the Lord, and he answered me;
    he delivered me from all my fears.
5 Those who look to him are radiant;
    their faces are never covered with shame.
6 This poor man called, and the Lord heard him;
    he saved him out of all his troubles.
7 The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him,
    and he delivers them.

8 Taste and see that the Lord is good;
    blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.

So this one time a young man named Iain was in a bit of bother — no surprises there to be honest — but anyway, he was in a bit of bother.

Actually I’m minimising here through his own actions he was in a LOT of bother. Now this didn’t really matter of course, he was where he was and he was — well — pretty much screwed.

The thing about Iain was that Jesus loved him very very much and they would speak often.

So this night, when Iain realises that THIS time he’s really messed up. He just kind of poured it out to God. I don’t deserve your love but right now I’m kind of in need of it.

Fine, says Jesus (I wonder if there was a note of resignation in his tone — it was likely just me…). You are loved, you’re still loved. Now go to sleep and when you waken in the morning the world would be new.

So, a miracle happened. Although still in trouble, still in a bit (a lot) of a pickle, the sun was streaming in through the curtains of my bedroom, the day before had been slate grey but today was one of those days where St Andrews had put on its best clothes. When I pulled open the curtains and opened the windows wide, I looked out upon a field of hay gently swaying in the wind, the cries of the seabirds. I just felt so special in that moment. So loved by the Lord — I just knew, whatever happened, he had my back the world was a beautiful place and would remain so long after my current internal storm had passed.

True peace. A true blessing.

O taste and see, how gracious the Lord is, blessed is the man, who trusteth in him. I sang that in St Salvator’s chapel that very Sunday. Oh boy, did I know what it meant.

PRAYER:

Lord let us sense your goodness

Lord let us realise you only ever want the best for us.

Give us today a day amongst all days where we can taste, see and feel blessed in this beautiful creation and let us be a verse in its song.
