Nectarines in Italy
Listen to this daily worship
Psalm 133 (NRSVA)
1 How very good and pleasant it is
when kindred live together in unity!
2 It is like the precious oil on the head,
running down upon the beard,
on the beard of Aaron,
running down over the collar of his robes.
3 It is like the dew of Hermon,
which falls on the mountains of Zion.
For there the Lord ordained his blessing,
life for evermore.
Over 25 years ago I visited Northern Italy and I tasted the most delicious nectarines. They were so plump and juicy and sweet. Just like the oil running down Aaron’s beard and down onto his robes, each bite of these perfect nectarines caused the juice to run down my face and neck and saturate my clothes. In some way the sweet juiciness of the nectarines stuck to me, sticking fast all the wonderful memories of my time in Italy. Twenty five years later I still smile with joy as I remember these nectarines.
Yesterday I wrote about sharing resources to stop food wastage. Today I’m thinking how wonderful it would be if we were really brothers and sisters together in unity. How wonderful it would be if children in Yemen, Afghanistan, Somalia could enjoy a delicious nectarine instead of facing day after day with a hungry belly.
PRAYER:
God, Creator of all
Move us to action.
Move us to care so much that we can’t stand to watch the suffering on our TV screens anymore.
Move us to demand more from our elected representatives.
Move us to action
Amen
