My name is Gabriel
Listen to this daily worship
Luke 1: 19 (NRSVA)
19 The angel replied, ‘I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.
In this one verse Luke brings us back to the point of his Gospel. He wants his readers to know that what he is reporting is true. I can hear Zechariah retelling the story that others would one day tell Luke. “I was curious, I wanted to know how this would all happen. Then I got my answer. He looked straight at me. ‘My name is Gabriel, I’m not a fictional character of your imagination. I stand in the presence of God and I have been sent to speak to you to tell you this good news.’”
And what were the implications of this reply? The angel was saying to Zechariah — all you can find to say, in the light of this good news, is to question the way God is going to bring this about?
Whaw! What an answer. No wonder he was struck silent!
PRAYER:
Lord God Almighty,
Give your angels today
Who stand in your presence
Words of authority to speak
To our questioning hearts
Forgive us when we can’t see
The wood for the trees
When we can’t see the lights for the fairies
When we can’t see the angels for the fakes
When Gabriel speaks
May we see your glory
Your salvation story.
