More than doubts

John 20: 25
25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”
Thomas said to them, “Unless I see the scars of the nails in his hands and put my finger on those scars and my hand in his side, I will not believe.”
We call him “Doubting Thomas”! I bet you he disliked that nickname. Who of us would like to be called that? “Doubting Robert” doesn’t have the same ring to it, but in truth we could all put our names in there, couldn’t we? I find myself at times, not really wanting to see the scars and the wounds in his side, but just to have a glimpse of Jesus, perhaps to actually see him and sit down and chat with him, or find myself walking along with him when I have my keep-fit moments and actually go out for a walk!
We know he is there. We know he’s alive. But just a little more reassurance (of the actually seeing him variety) would be wonderful, wouldn’t it? Or to jump in Doctor Who’s Tardis and go back in time just to see him and listen to his teaching, perhaps on the sunny hillside as he preached the sermon on the mount? But it’s not about seeing is it? It’s about believing, and happy are those who believe without seeing. Don’t be harsh on Thomas, there’s probably a little bit of him in all of us. A glance through the Psalms will bring you to find others with doubts along their faith journey, and that’s OK, it’s part of our faith. But at some point we lay aside our doubts and believe!
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, you know what’s in our minds and in our hearts, you know that we too have our doubts along the way. Though we cannot see you, help us to believe and to trust in you and your promises. You are the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Come to us, abide with us. Amen.
