Massaged Feet
Listen to this daily worship
Proverbs 16: 24 (NRSVA)
24 Pleasant words are like a honeycomb,
sweetness to the soul and health to the body.
Have you ever had a foot massage? I remember having one once and it was a remarkable mix of soothing and tickly. I think I enjoyed it. Notwithstanding my experience with a foot massage there are many people who find them relaxing and comforting.
The Proverb we have today talks about gracious words being like honeycomb, being sweet and healing to the bones. There are certainly people who find a foot massage to be equally sweet and healing to the bones.
I know that many people don’t like the thought of somebody touching their feet, or the thought of touching anyone else’s feet, and I understand that. Feet are sweaty and bumpy and tickly and gross. Life is often sweaty and bumpy and maybe not tickly but certainly gross. And knowing that God reaches out to me in that is nourishing and heals my bones. And when someone else reaches out to me in the grossness of life I feel my bones healing too.
Speaking good words and reaching out to people in the mess of their lives with actions, is nourishing and healing.
PRAYER:
God,
As we wiggle our toes and feel the ground under our feet,
Remind us to reach out with kindness,
As we pull on our socks of compassion and shoes of hope,
Ready to spread your love in the world.
Amen.
