Luke 2: 19-20 (NRSVA)
19 But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.
‘Sheep won’t watch themselves’ the shepherds joked when they finally had to go. Their words have stayed with me though. As has their kindness and what they told me about the angels’ message. Is my little baby really going to be everything that they said? A saviour? The Messiah?
But he’s so little.
Joy to all people they said, now that would be something. My boy bringing joy to everyone. He brought joy to those shepherds, they loved his funny faces and strong lungs, he’s brought joy to our hosts, despite his cries they want to coo over him and talk about his future in carpentry. If only they knew. And he’s brought so much joy to Joseph, I’m so proud of him, he’s already talking about teaching him to make his first table.
Maybe he will bring joy to people all over the world. I trust God, and if God says it will be then I look forward to it. But first, until he’s ready for that great task, he is making me joyful and I will do my very best to do the same for him.
PRAYER:
Dear God
Thank you that you came to bring joy and to save us
Help us when joy is hard to find
Keep us wrapped in your love and warmth this season
Let us know that through Jesus, and in you, we are treasured.
