Psalm 150 (NRSVA)
1
Praise the Lord!
Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty firmament!2
Praise him for his mighty deeds;
praise him according to his surpassing greatness!3
Praise him with trumpet sound;
praise him with lute and harp!4
Praise him with tambourine and dance;
praise him with strings and pipe!5
Praise him with clanging cymbals;
praise him with loud clashing cymbals!6
Let everything that breathes praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord!
“Hallelujah! Praise God…
Music in worship has long been a point of contention.
A bit like liturgy it can divide us – unaccompanied Psalm singing, organ music and choristers, or a praise band…
We’re all different!
Music can really help transport us into the realms of the Holy in worship, singing can unify us, as with one voice we sing the things we believe to be true about our God.
But I’ve also found that some of the times when I have sensed God’s presence most keenly, when I am most connected to the Holy, that these moments have had a music all of their own… those moments where literally my heart sings… where I hear a sound I imagine can only be the angels singing the Angel’s song in the Holy of Holies!
I call those moments my glass-singing moments… you know, that perfect sound that a glass makes when you run your finger around its rim?
These are moments of purity, of peace, of unity, of beauty…. Where for me, heaven and earth are one and my heart joins with all of creation to sing.
A moment revelling in the beauty of creation on Rannoch moor, resting in the heather, feeling the warm sun on my skin and hearing only the sounds of the birds and the bees around me as bog cotton brushes against me and tickles me as it bobs in the breeze, and noticing that the cotton wool clouds above me in the huge expanse of blue look close enough to touch…
A moment at one with creation… and my Creator!
What moments bring their own music to your life and encourage your heart to sing?
When do you feel most connected to God?
What aids you in your worship?
What makes your heart sing?
PRAYER:
Music maker,
Composer or life,
Song giver,
May our hearts sing out your praise.
May our lives live out the melody of your love,
May we be notes of your grace bringing light and love and colour in the humdrum music of life…
In Jesus’ name,
Amen
